NASA STI PROGRAMMES AND NRTS

The NASA Scientific and Technical Information (STI) Program supports the acquisition, organization, management, dissemination, and long-term retention and safeguarding of STI relevant to NASA's research and development and missions. The purpose of the NASA STI Program is to:

  • Help ensure that NASA research is cost-effective by providing NASA personnel with access to existing NASA and worldwide research results. In this way, the NASA STI Program reduces duplication and increases productivity, which not only increases the yield of the tax dollars invested in NASA research but also accelerates scientific progress


  • Support the work of the U.S. aerospace industries. To maintain their competitiveness, they rely on current knowledge of R & D developments in NASA, the United States, and the world


  • Share the results of NASA's research with the world, as appropriate

The STI Program sponsors the NASA Technical Report Server (NTRS) and other STI related products including:

  • NASA Thesaurus (listing of aerospace terms showing how if a term is synomomous or related to other terms)
  • SCAN and STAR (alert services of new STI content acquired by NASA)
  • Spinoff magazine (articles on commercialized technology developed by NASA)

Nasa dominates as rivals play catch-up

Engineers opened the hatch of the Mars 500 space capsule this week and six "cosmonauts" emerged from a simulated three-month interplanetary flight. Next year, the Russian and European space agencies will send another crew on a longer simulated mission to Mars and back, lasting a year and a half. The cosmonauts - four from Russia and two from western Europe - live in isolation in a mock spacecraft outside Moscow, experiencing conditions as close as possible to a real flight.
